Creating a Retro Kitchen Design

Love that retro kitchen look, but don't know where to begin?

Creating your own retro kitchen theme is easier than you think, and even in today's economic climate, it can be accomplished without spending a lot of money.
There's nothing that adds instant charm and appeal to a modern-day kitchen like decorating with vintage accessories from the colorful post-war 40's or the mod 50's.In fact, deciding on your color scheme is perhaps the most challenging part of the project.

Do you prefer the bold, primary colors and fruit patterns of the 1940's, or the pastel pinks and aquas of the 1950's? Do you already own a colorful set of vintage glassware, or a set of retro dishes that you can pull one or two colors from to use throughout the room?
If time and finances allow, painting the walls is still the most inexpensive way to immediately change the look and feel of a room. But if painting is not possible, don't let it discourage you. Any existing neutral color is the ideal background for vibrant 40's accessories or 50's atomic prints.

Once you've decided on your color scheme, adding retro kitchen accessories is easy. You simply can't get it wrong if you add only those things that you make you smile. And with prudent shopping, vintage pieces can generally be purchased for less than their contemporary counterparts.

Vintage linens like tablecloths, dishtowels and potholders are still abundant and for the most part, affordable, yet they can have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of your kitchen.
Consider installing a wire rack with hooks above the stove to hang vintage cooking utensils. Utensils with red and white or cream and green painted handles make a great wall display even when they're not in use.

Extra wall space can also be used to show off a funky kitchen clock, a retro wall phone, or a collection of spice racks or vintage trays.
And remember that vintage kitchenware is not just for display. For instance, I love my set of primary color bowls, and use them every day for mixing, serving and storing. The same is true of my vintage refrigerator dishes; they are used daily, and they've essentially eliminated the need for disposable plastic containers in my kitchen.
